Activities : Artists, Craftsmen and Museums

Njáll Exhibitions & Njáll Feast are two popular local attractions - both located in Hvolsvöllur. The area around the Hvolsvöllur village is the site of the dramatic Njál’s Saga, the masterpiece of an anonymous 12th century author. Guided tours around the saga centre stage are available, including extensive explainations of the atmosphere in the Viking age and the Icelandic community at the time. Visitors also get to experience traditional noontime meals in a typical Middle Age lodge. Evening programs are also available during weekends during the summer.

Folk Museum Skógar The museum was founded in 1949 on the initiative of Þórður Tómasson. He was born in 1921 at Vallnatún under the Vestur-Eyjafjöll Mountains in South Iceland, where he grew up with his parents, Tómas Þórðarson and Kristín Magnúsdóttir and siblings. At an early age Þórður developed an interest in Icelandic culture and its conservation. He completed lower secondary studies from Reykjavík High School. Together with his work at the museum, Þórður has published many books on aspects of Icelandic folk culture. In 1997 Þórður’s contribution to cultural history was recognised when he was awarded an honorary doctorate of the University of Iceland. Over 25.000 people visit this enchanting museum each year. He is a very special character that is always well remembered by museum visitors.

Many other local museums are also within close range. They can be found the “Ghost Museum” in Stokkseyri , Stöng and in Vík . The Handicraft house in Hella is also definitely well worth a visit. The hotel staff can also give directions to local artists and craftsmen.
